Zebra Mussels

The Zebra mussel is an invasive species of mussel, about the size of a fingernail but sometimes up to two inches in length. Originating in Russia, over the past couple centuries they have spread to Western Europe, then to North America. The zebra mussel often outcompetes native mussel species, although their beneficial effects on water quality has led to some increases in fish populations.

Crayfish, waterfowl, and other animals prey upon the zebra mussel, although the great densities of zebra mussel are often little affected by any predation. Most recently, zebra mussel have been found in the Housatonic river in Massachusetts, with state officials fearful of it spreading into the nearby Quabbin Reservoir, a major water source for Boston and many other areas.
