About

The black mamba is a species of highly venomous snake endemic to parts of sub-Saharan Africa. It is the longest venomous snake in Africa, reaching up to 4.5 m (14 ft), and one of the fastest snakes in the world, capable of moving at speeds up to 20 km/h (12 mph). Despite its name, it is not black but olive or grey; the name refers to the black colouration inside its mouth, which it displays when threatened.

Fun Fact

Despite its name, the black mamba is olive-brown — 'black' refers to the inky-black interior of its mouth, which it opens wide in a dramatic threat display when cornered.
