About

The Gila monster is a species of venomous lizard native to the southwestern United States and northwestern Mexico. It is one of only a few venomous lizards in the world. Growing up to 56 cm (22 in) in length, it has a stout body with beaded scales in patterns of black with pink, orange, or yellow. It spends most of its time underground and can store fat in its large tail, allowing it to go months between meals.

Fun Fact

A protein discovered in Gila monster venom led to the development of exenatide (Byetta), a groundbreaking diabetes medication — making this sluggish desert lizard one of the most medically valuable reptiles on Earth.
