Iguana iguana
Reptilia · Squamata · Iguanidae
The green iguana is a large, arboreal, mostly herbivorous species of lizard native to Central and South America and the Caribbean. It can grow to 1.5 m (5 ft) in total length, including its long tail. Despite their name, green iguanas can range in colour from bright green as juveniles to brownish or grey as adults. They are excellent swimmers and will often leap from branches into water to escape predators.
Fun Fact
Green iguanas have a 'third eye' on top of their head — called a parietal eye — that can't form images but detects light and shadow, helping them spot aerial predators like hawks approaching from above.
