It is found in grassland and other open areas in Austria, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Albania, Bulgaria, Croatia, Greece, Hungary, Moldova, Romania, Russia, Serbia, Montenegro, North Macedonia, Slovakia, and Ukraine.

It is unique among mice in its habit of building mounds in the autumn.
