About

The Nile monitor is a large member of the monitor lizard family, found throughout sub-Saharan Africa and along the Nile River. It is the largest lizard in Africa, reaching lengths of up to 2.4 m (8 ft). It is an excellent swimmer and is usually found near permanent bodies of water. Nile monitors are opportunistic feeders, eating fish, snails, frogs, crocodile eggs, birds, small mammals, and insects.

Fun Fact

Nile monitors are powerful swimmers that raid crocodile nests for eggs — one monitor will distract the guarding mother while others dig up and devour the clutch, a behaviour that suggests cooperative hunting.
