Mammalia · Monotremata · Tachyglossidae
The eastern long-beaked echidna, also called Barton's long-beaked echidna, is one of three species from the genus Zaglossus to occur in New Guinea. It is found mainly in the eastern half at elevations between 2,000 and 3,000 metres.
Fun Fact
Long-beaked echidnas are so ancient and enigmatic that scientists know almost nothing about their reproduction in the wild — they were only seen reproducing in captivity for the first time in 2016.
