The speckled mousebird is the largest species of mousebird, as well as one of the most common. It is found throughout most of Central, Eastern and Southern Africa.

Mousebirds clamber through branches using their feet in any orientation—forwards, backwards, or sideways—and huddle in tight clusters at night to conserve body heat.
